[EW!] KOMBUCHA TYPE

This typeset was crafted using kombucha leather harvested by haute gardener, Ivan Hunga Garcia. I used the finished leather pieces as the basis for constructed typeforms. The goal was to experiment with translating a natural material into type and encapsulate the visible irregularities of kombucha.

Research has found that exposure to natural environments can help restore attention through “soft fascination”, whilst research into bacterial cellulose describes how its microbial origins can provoke feelings of disgust. These findings formed the ideological rubric of my investigation where i aimed to encapsulate the attention-grabbing effects of kombucha’s ew phenomenon by encapsulating it’s natural variance.

EW! type aims to echo kombucha’s aliveness into a variable, unpredictable typeface, drawing attention, creating a moment for inspection and promting people to do the same with the world around us.
